“Moving on Up (To The Big Leagues…)”

I can’t resist a tasty reference to a tv show theme song from my childhood. I can’t help it. As I’ve stated in previously, my brain is wired like this: I say, think, or hear a word, and my brain tries to find a reference to something else (usually music or from tv) that matches it. It’s a disease!

In this case, I’m moving down….to go up (“…to the big leagues, getting (my) turn at bat!”). Let me explain.

My office is on the second floor, along with our bedroom, a very small bathroom, and my smallish walk-in closet. I affectionately call it, “My Loft.” It’s my wing of the house – you know, because no one else lives here (joking!) – when my husband (aka “Mr. NexStitch”) has clients over; I have nearly all of what I need up here to subsist for days (OK, minus the food) and be perfectly content. Well, sort of. It’s hard to be perfectly content when your environment is not functional or decorative.

My desk will stay in this place but I'm going to try to make those floating IKEA bookshelves work on the right-side wall next to my desk.

So, we’re moving my office downstairs temporarily into another unfinished bedroom (which will eventually become a dining room) while work on my office is completed. This seems to be the order of things: move contents of Room A to Room B during construction and make due until it’s done (I can’t help but wonder what we’re going to do once we run out of empty rooms.) Right now I have the majority of my stuff down there except for what I piled onto my desk while I attempt to recover that shawl pattern I was working on.

This bookshelf will get torn down and replaced with one with more dividers so I can put both books, yarn, and lil' do-dads on it. It'll be stained to match the trim.

But yesterday we got a call from the electrician who gave us a reasonable quote. The only caveat seems to be that he won’t start his work until I tear down this room. So…sounds like I’m tearing down this room, maybe even TODAY!

I have a smallish closet for craft stuff. I plan to put a chair in that back corner along with a yarn storage thingie-ma-bobber my mom gave me for my birthday 3 years ago.

I can’t wait. No, literally: I. Can’t. WAIT. I LOVE remodeling! I’m excited to do a karate chop kick right to the sheetrock. I’m looking forward to ripping it all down, every ounce of twice painted-over-wallpaper, nasty-colored sheetrock.

I'm still undecided about what to do with this back corner. There will hopefully be a door on that wall with access to an eave on the other side of the wall that I haven't been able to get into since Day 1. It had to be closed off in order for my desk to fit against the wall. Possible storage possibilities await!

So I’m moving on down, so I can get on up, up to something much nicer, something more functional – with places to put stuff – and yet decorative. Something that’ll help feed my craft. I’m finally going to get, “…my piece of the pie-hi-hii-hiiiiiii!”

  1. Lovely encouraging post. Many people would complain about the hassle of moving from room to room so I think it’s great that you seem to be really embracing the remodel as a way to make the space you want. Awesome.

Oh, I was excited to move stuff! It’s like packing for a vacation for me. I started moving stuff DAYS ago. And I’m glad I did because it saved me a lot of time with how quickly this thing is coming into place.
