Friday Night Special: Floor Sanding

Nude. Nekid. Unsheathed. Unclothed. Bare. Raw. Au Natural. In the Buff. Exposed. And otherwise unclad floors.

So, what did you all do on Friday night? Me? I did what everyone else does on a Friday night: I was helping to sand floors in my office and the hallway until 11:30pm.

I worked the Edgerrrr. That bad boy has a mind of it’s own. What a beast of a time it was (mostly for The Husband) bending over and shuffling – sashaying, really – across the floor, following it’s quick gate. Meanwhile, The Husband worked the drum sander. We made quite a dust storm in the house.

Right now the floors are in transition. We’re waiting for the contractor to come back tomorrow and work his magic with the trimwork and bookshelf, which I’m dying to see. He worked on it over the weekend while we stripped the floors.

Bare floors after a grueling day of sanding. The view is looking toward where my desk will be (where it's always been).

There was a lot of back and forth with how many shelves to make, how many cubbies to create within each shelf, and how to finish it off so it looks like it matches the existing trim we’ve hashed out in the bedroom but doesn’t visually overpower the coolness of the bookshelf as a whole. I think we landed on something we can both agree will look nice and be doable in the allotted time frame.

However, I’m just not looking forward to the actual act of finishing and sealing the floors. The last time we did it, it caused lots of angst. I mean, the whole process needs to be choreographed like “Riverdance”: which way to start brushing, making sure to feather in the edges of each swipe of the mop-like tool used to apply the finish and sealer, and figuring out how to “mop” yourself out of the room without having to step on any of the work. Not to mention making sure you’re not using too much or too little of the product. It’s not fun. Actually, I would say it’s rather stress-enducing.

I can't wait to finish and seal them. They were in poor condition, but had so much potential. They were a similar color to the door (which will be going very soon).

AND, we have the added issue of having to also do the hallway since it runs right into my office. This will, in effect, block off our bedroom for a few hours at a time. So we have to start earlier enough in the day to allow enough time to dry in order to gain access to our bedroom and my walk-in closet in that hallway.

Oh, and did I mention that we’re doing 3 coats of this Bona Traffic floor finish stuff? We decided on 3 because stuff gets moved around on these floors a lot and we only want to explore this seriously fun process (read: sarcasm) only once.

– On a side note, we’re totally impressed with this product. We did the bedroom floors with it and it’s so solid looking. And tough. Tough as nails. Think: clear coat on polished finger nails tough. We also purchased it from the link above and were equally impressed with them. I ordered from Floor Mechanics late in the day on Monday. About an hour later I got an email saying it had shipped!  It was at my house by Thursday afternoon, having come 3/4 of the way across the country. Not bad. –

So, 4 days of trim work and door installs remain. And then we finish and seal the floors. And then I paint. And then the trim work is stained and poly’ed. And then I get to move back in.

There is light at the end of this tunnel.

At least someone is getting some ZzzZzzzz's!
