Craft Room Remodeling (What Makes a Great Craft Room?)

Very recently, Mr. NexStitch and I finished a bedroom remodel that spanned several months (we got hung up on a stain color for the trim and doors). It was an uphill battle, but being the first room in our home to be remodeled - other than my husband’s basement recording studio – it provided the “blueprint” of sorts for every room to come.

With that room completed, and with the summer months coming, I have a lot of momentum to continue pushing forward in my goal to rip out every room in this house down to the stud and start anew. The next room on the list is my office/craft room so I’ve been spending a lot of time pondering the elements of a great craft room.

Over 10 years ago and during the pre-NexStitch years, I moved in with my husband to a place he was renting. There, I had an office space that I did over and loved. More than anything, I loved the shelves that overlapped one another. I miss that room. Seriously miss it.

This was so long ago. I didn't even have a Mac then (Ancient Times).

I somehow managed to squeeze everything I needed into this room and make it look good in the process.

Two houses later, I still consider this my best office space yet. It’s those shelves that I lust over! And yet, in my new current home, I can’t have them above my desk because my office is upstairs in a Cape Cod home (the dreaded slanted ceilings). It makes me sad, especially when I see the pictures of this office!

So now with the impending construction, I have to ask myself, “What are the important elements for me in my current situation that I need to include in this new craft room/office?”

I need a space that is flexible, that allows me to move stuff around if needed because I often need to drag out lights, a folding table, and a photo tent for pictures. I need a small nook where I could possibly have a small, comfy chair and my yarn storage table (my mom got it for me a few years back). I also need to figure out if it’s possible to put those shelves in some other configuration somewhere else in my room so that I can display stuff on them. And the space needs to match the look and feel of my bedroom, too, which is right next door. Overall, it needs to be functional and decorative simultaneously because I need my work space to feel inspiring, to make me want to do great things.

But that’s just me. How about you? What makes a great craft room? What are the elements that you need to make it work? Do you already have an awesome space to work or are you like me lusting over everyone else’s space? Show me your space!

  1. Lost of natural sunlight is a must. Uncluttered space and yet areas to throw my clutter together (baskets or closets) when I’m in a rush or not sure where their actual “place” is going to be.
