Grandma’s Snowflakes

These were given to me more than several years ago, I believe by my mother. I’m not sure as it was a long time ago. They were snowflakes made by my great-granmother, who taught me how to crochet when I was 9.

I used to go to her house when I was young and she’d watch me for awhile. She lived in a high-rise building for elderly people in Linden, NJ. She had two loves in her life: crochet and Bingo. Towards the end of her life, she spent a lot of time doing both.

She crocheted mostly doilies and baby items. When the Cabbage Patch craze was in full effect (and I had a dozen of’em), she began working on a baby layette set for one of my dolls. The thing was, I didn’t realize it was for me, but she worked on it in front of me, telling me that it was for a baby for someone she knew. I really liked watching her work on it. It was a lavender dress with crisp white trim and reminded me of the dress from a fairy tale story that I liked. I’ll have to dig it out of the storage room and take a picture of it.

Anyway, my great-grandmother also made these snowflakes which are the best looking ones that hang from my tree:
